LAUREN KO is an artist, writer, self-taught home baker, and founder of the popular Instagram account @lokokitchen where she has amassed over 300,000 followers. Her colorful geometric style made all hell bake loose on the frontier of contemporary pie art, and her iconic signature spoke design has been dubbed the “modern lattice.” Her work has been featured in publications such as Vogue, O Magazine, Buzzfeed’s Tasty, and on-screen in Martha Bakes. Her creations continue to inspire globally from Seattle, WA, where Lauren lives with her husband, Ben, and their bear dog, Santi.
PIEOMETRY: Modern Tart Art and Pie Design for the Eye and the Palate by Lauren Ko
Lauren reveals her secrets, sharing stories about her designs and the inspiration behind them. Ever relatable and quick with a pun, she recounts the spectacular “piesasters” that led to some of her best creations and breaks down her most beautiful designs, describing how to make naturally colored dough, intricate weaves, and striking cut-out patterns. PIEOMETRY provides clear, step-by-step instructions, accompanied by helpful photographs, which any patient baker can follow to build these pies from bottom crust to top in their own kitchens.

How to best support students during virtual learning:
Don’t be afraid to reach out to your child’s teacher
Ask questions – be specific about your needs
Seek virtual workshops through your district
Ask for videos / guidance on how to navigate the learning platforms
Reach out to other parents for support: culturally we are a communicative people
Give yourself space and grace to know that we are all in the same space – none of us know everything there is to know about virtual learning
Build a relationship with your child’s teacher
Know that your efforts are appreciated
Take a walk and get outside to enjoy your children outside of the stress
How to Best Prepare and Support your Child
Provide quiet working environment – to the best of your ability
Headphones, if possible, to decrease distractions
Be patient, every year brings new challenges and new learning
Encourage students to ask questions and / or seek 1: 1 or small group instruction with the teacher
If worse comes to worse, use youtube for further instruction for learning content such as math and language arts
The most important thing you can do to support learning is to be patient. This is traumatizing for students to be away from their friends and teachers. Especially to be with a teacher they’ve never met before.
Make sure they understand and follow the guidelines for virtual learning to get the most out of instruction
READ! Listen and watch youtube videos; seek reading sites such as epic, razkids, myON, ask the teacher for reading apps your child can access. Have them read to you
If they can’t read, they will struggle in all subject areas. They need to know how to read to understand the work.
Continue working on tapping into your cultural assets and create new traditions.
